Sylvester J. "Sparky" Sparks, 80, of Chillicothe died at 3 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry. Born Feb. 27, 1919, in St. Louis to Henry "Harry" and Augusta Faulstich Sparks, he married Mary Sayers on Oct. 6, 1945, in Granite City. She died Dec. 21, 1992, in Chillicothe. Three brothers, four sisters and two stepbrothers also preceded him in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Nancy) Scherer of Sparland and Mrs. Kenneth (Bonnell) Hattan of Chillicothe; one son, Tech. Sgt. Kevin Sparks of Charleston, S.C.; one stepbrother, Glenn Park of Peoria; one stepsister, Lucille Davis of Texas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A World War II Army veteran, he also served in the Navy Reserves and the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4999 in Chillicothe, where he served as commander for two terms. He was a former member of AMVETS Post 778 in Chillicothe and was a past member of the Peoria Casting Club.
