On January 9, 1851 as Helen A. Maxwell, she married R. E. DeRussy at Norfolk City, Virginia.
They were the parents of four children.
After her husband's death in 1865 Helen decided not to vacate their quarters at Fort Monroe in Virginia as was the custom, but remained indefinitely. At the time of his death the couple had four daughters in their infancy. The residence became known as the DeRussy House. In November 1891 she left Fort Monroe and moved to New York.
