At the time of her death was one of the oldest residents of Canton and one of only 1 or 2 people in the town that personally knew Silas Wright. Born Feb 10, 1820 in Pamelia, Jefferson County NY and was the daughter of Adolphus and Ruth Knight Rice. Moved with her family to Lowville, Lewis County NY shortly after her birth, and then when 18, moved to Canton NY where she lived for more than 70 years.
Married Elijah Bassett at the Universalist Church on February 28, 1841. Together they had two children, Cyrus who died in 1900 and Flora, who married James Payton, who survived her.

She was a great reader and possessed a business knowledge and judgment that would have done credit to any businessman of her time. In her early life she also went among the sick and gave her strength and skill unsparingly and without money or pride.

In addition to her daughter, her survivors also included a grandchild, two great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
