Born to Abraham Barfield (1776-after 1850) & Martha Atkinson Barfield (1778-1849). The names Barfield/Barefield seemed to be used interchangeably during the 1800s in this family.

Ervin married Wincey Catherine Spinks (1821-1911) on Oct. 21, 1847, in Lauderdale County, MS.

Four children:
• Mary V. Barefield Barefield (1848-1938)
• Sarah Elizabeth Barefield Edwards (1852-1934)
• John Spinks Barfield (1853-1929)
• Enola Ervin Barfield Williamson (1856-1948)

In addition to these children, Wincey reared Nancy Catherine McGahey after Nancy's parents died. Nancy married Wincey's half-brother, James Alexander Spinks.
