S.A. Lewis Jr.
A celebration of life service for S.A. Lewis Jr., 86, of Tyler, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Stewart Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Kim Beckham officiating. Mr. Lewis passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, in Tyler.

S.A. was born to S.A. Lewis Sr. and Annie Bass Lewis in Flint, and lived most of his life in Tyler. He played the trumpet in high school and was quite the dancer, jitterbugging like a professional. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and, after training in Seattle with Boeing, he was a B-17 airplane and engine mechanic in the 231st Army Air Corps Base Unit in New Mexico during World War II. Afterwards, he used his GI Bill to attend Caruther's College of Horology in Tyler and became a watch maker. His interest in jewelry of all kinds led him to become a certified gemologist and owner of The Jewel Box for over 50 years. He also served as a bank director. He will be remembered for his smile, friendliness and constant humor. He loved weekly golf with his friendly foursome for over 30 years. He was a charter member of Hollytree Country Club. He was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church for over 60 years, and in his younger days taught Junior Sunday School, building the program with his personality and enthusiasm. He was generous to his church and felt that everyone should tithe.

Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his brother Eldred and three sisters, Joy, Letha and Gwen; his son-in-law Glenn Jenkins; and granddaughter, Melissa Majors. He is survived by his loving family including his devoted wife of 66 years, Dorothy; children, Pat Jenkins and Janet Majors; grandchildren, Stacy Jenkins Waldrup, Chuck Jones, and Amy Jenkins Tyler and husband Hank; and great-grandchildren, Ashley Waldrup and Macey Tyler.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.

Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, 1343 E. Grande Blvd., Tyler, 75703; The Humane Society of East Texas, P.O. Box 6151, Tyler, 75711-6151; or the charity of your choice.
