Former Sumatra Resident Dies, Nebraska Rites Set For George Bender

Final rites will be held in Nebraska for a former Sumatra rancher, George Bender, 80, who had lived at Moore for the last 18 months.

Mr. Bender, who had been in ill health for three years, died Tuesday at St. Joseph's hospital in Lewistown.

He grew up near Lincoln, Neb., where he operated a corn and wheat farm before coming to Montana in 1913. In that year he homesteaded 17 miles north of Sumatra in Rosebud County. He remained there until 1937 when he retired and moved to Washington. He returned later but left his ranch permanently in 1943 because of ill health. Before moving to Moore, he spent some time in Lynden Wash.

His wife, Amelia Snyder Bender, whom he married in 1909, preceded him in death, succumbing Jan. 6, 1929.

Accompanying the body to Nebraska are a son, George R. Bender, and a daughter, Alma T. Thomas, both of Moore.

Also surviving are another son, Albert R. Bender of Laurel, Montana; a sister, Marie K. Sage of Maple Falls, Washington; three grandchildren, and a number of nephew and nieces.

A third son, William S. Bender, was killed in action on Iwo Jima Feb. 27, 1945.
