Mary Catherine Young was the second born child on the family farm near Saint James, Maryland, on June 7, 1849, to Caroline Bear, age 23, and Elias Young, age 25.

Mary's mother passed away in 1853 in Washington, Maryland, at the age of 28. Mary's father was remarried, then had several more children with Mary's step-mother.

Mary was still just a girl when the Civil War was being waged back and forth across Maryland.

Mary married Isaac Emmert on February 18, 1875, when she was 25 years old. Isaac was part of the venerable family that had done so much to establish the Brethren church in western Maryland.

Mary and Isaac had at least six children between 1875 and 1889. They only tied the odds regarding youth mortality, burying Joseph who died at the age of 30, Minnie when she died at the age of 22, and Mary Naomi when she died at the tender age of 15.

Mary's father, Elias, passed away on August 20, 1898, at the age of 74.

Mary and Isaac had moved into town in Hagerstown when she died on April 10, 1909 at the age of 59. Her remains were committed to the earth near her deceased children and parents at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.
