Bessemer City - Alfred Walker Bohanan Jr, 73, died on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at home. He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Alfred Walker Bohanan and Lila Rudisill Bohanan.

After graduating from Gastonia High School in 1955, he went to work for Cocker Machine and Foundry Company. In 1965 he started his own business, Bohanan Industries, manufacturing precision machinery and machine parts primarily for the synthetic fiber industry. In 1983 he started A.W. Bohanan Co, Inc. He ran that company along with his wife, sons and faithful and dedicated assistant of over 30 years, Katherine Moss. The two accomplishments that he was most proud of was the development by him and his sons of a High Speed Encapsulation Machine for the pharmaceutical and herbal industries and the fabrication of a new lighted outdoor cross for Lake Junaluska Methodist Conference Center.

As a youth he won several awards as a newspaper carrier for the Gazette. He served on the Gaston County School Board during the time of consolidation, was a trustee or member of various boards including Greensboro College, Gaston College and the Greensboro Children's Home. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Greensboro College in 2004. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Gastonia Rotary. Al was instrumental, along with Redbird Thomas, in providing a building for the Gaston Literacy Council and FUMC. He was part of a North Carolina Trade Mission to Russia and Eastern Europe in 1973.

As a youth, Mr. Bohanan was a member of Marietta Street Baptist Church. He joined First United Methodist church in 1956 where he was a member for over 50 years. He faithfully served the church as a teacher and member of many boards and committees. He was a member of newly formed Christ United Methodist Church, Gastonia for several years where he also actively served.

Survivors of Mr. Bohanan include his wife of 55 years and sweetheart since the 4th grade, Carolyn Walker Bohanan; son, Steven Alfred Bohanan of Cornelius, N.C.; daughter, Dawn Bohanan Serman and son-in-law, Brigham S. Serman, of Arlington, Texas; former daughters-in-law, Sharon W. Bohanan of Gastonia; Melesa V. Bohanan of Bessemer City; sister, Evelyn B. Wells of Murrell's Inlet, S.C.; sisterin-law, Joyce B. Bohanan of Dallas, N.C.; brotherin-law, Don Atkins of Dallas, N.C.; sister-inlaw, JoElla Walker Willis and husband, George G. Willis III, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and brother-in-law, George Alton Walker Jr., of Hickory. Six grandchildren, Jennifer Bohanan of Charlotte, Stephanie Bohanan of Bessemer City, Erikah K. Bohanan and Chantzler W. Bohanan of Bessemer City, Kendall E. Serman and Alexander B. Serman of Arlington, Texas; three greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Eric Walker Bohanan; sister, Hazel B. Atkins, and a brother T.F. Joe Bohanan.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, September 24, 2010, at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. A service to celebrate Alfred's life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. C.B. Barr, Dr. James Westmoreland, and the Rev. George Freeman officiating. Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.
