Frances and her sister Lucy were daughters of prominent ship's captain Henry Whitney of Castine. Frances married a ship's captain, Leonard Whiting, and sailed with him and their two young children John and Annie, until he died suddenly in 1855. In 1858 she married his brother Samuel and they had two more children Henry and Mary while living in Castine, Maine and investing in sailing vessels.
