In the 1850 US Census, 11 year old Eliza is the only child from the first marriage listed living with her father's family in Washington County, NY. There is a story from the Macklin family history in Washington County, that older sister Mary Jane Macklin (1831-1908) traveled from Ireland to New York in 1850. Mary Jane asked to see her mother's grave, her father could not remember the location. Mary Jane and her sisters were much displeased with this callousness and they and their families had little to do with James thereafter. The Illinois St. Andrew Society has a notation that Eliza's sister, Margaret Macklin moved with Jemima Hoy Cummings from NY to Somonauk, Illinois in 1855. Probably Eliza came along with Hoy too. Further evidenced by "Lizzie" naming a son, Hoy.
"Lizzie" Macklin married Thomas Scott Hopkins in February 1866 and had their first of six children in Aurora, Illinois in 1866.
