Chico Enterprise, July 14, 1914: "Tom Fimple and Ranch Hand Killed. Engine hit auto at Durham. Ex-Supervisor and His Employee Meet Death. Tom V. Fimple, former supervisor of Butte county, prominent resident of the county and owner of a farm and unidentified man thought to be Grover Lewis of this city, who had been working for him for several days, were instantly killed at 12:45 this afternoon when a light engine on the Southern Pacific road crashed into the automobile in which the men were riding.

"Fimple's head was crushed and he was otherwise injured, while the body of his companion was carried for 400 feet on the pilot of the locomotive before the engine was stopped.

"The accident occurred at the county road crossing at the mill about a block north of the depot. Fimple and companion were riding eastward in the auto and the light engine was speeding south. On one side of the crossing the mill obstructs the view, while on the other side an empty box car stood, so neither the engineer nor the occupants of the automobile could see danger ahead.

"Fimple was at the wheel of the auto and the machine reached the middle of the track just as the locomotive reached the crossing. The engine struck the auto squarely in the middle, wrecking it and carrying part of the machine on the pilot with the dead body of the young man.

"Fimple was knocked several feet from the track. Both were instantly killed.

"Engineer McKnight stopped the engine within about a block of the crossing. The auto, after being struck by the locomotive, turned over and parts of it struck the crossing sign pole, breaking it off at the ground. Pieces of the auto were hurled a hundred feet from the scene of the accident.

"Tom Fimple was perhaps one of the best known residents of Butte county. He was well to do and numbered among the most successful farmer of the county. He was supervisor eight years ago for two terms and was a candidate at one time for sheriff.

"Fimple was a brother-in-law of John Konning, a wealthy land owner, and leaves a widow and one daughter, Mrs. Sam Colm, both of whom are at Durham and heartbroken over the affair.

"Lewis was a stepson of H. Luts of this city and leaves two other brothers living here.

"The locomotive was in charge of Engineer McKnight and he and the fireman have been detained at Durham to attend the inquest, which is being held this afternoon. Coroner Hamilton is on his way from Oroville. The inquest is in progress late this afternoon. The name of Fimple's companion has not yet been learned.

Chico Enterprise, Wednesday, July 15, 1914: "Edward Derullard Was Name of The Young Man Killed With Tom Fimple. Lived With His Mother Near Humboldt Avenue. Edward Derullard was the name of the young man killed yesterday with Tom V. Fimple, when a light engine of the Southern Pacific Company struck the automobile in which they were riding at the crossing at Durham...... Derullard was 19 years of age and a grandson of W. J. Hawkins of this city. They live on Linden street, just north of Humboldt avenue. He went to work for Fimple Monday morning and, because of his physical condition, gave up the job and Fimple was taking him to the Northern Electric station at Gridley so he could board a car for this city."
