From the Sherman County Times, Loup City, Nebraska, April 14, 1893, page 5, transcribed by Linda Berney:

Mr. David P. Cole, father of Mrs. Chris Hauck, died at his home in Custer county last Friday. Funeral was held Sunday, at one o'clock. Mr. Cole was well known here, having at one time been a resident of this city. We extend sympathy to the bereaved wife and children.

David Payne COLE was born on 21 Dec 1833 in Huron Co., OH.

He served in the military about 1862 in 73rd Indiana Regiment, Co. E (discharge papers). David's discharge papers show he enlisted in Co. E., 73rd Indiana Regiment, at Calumet, Indiana, on Aug. 11, 1862, by Capt. Green, was mustered on Aug. 16, 1862, at South Bend, Indiana, by Capt. Fessenden, and was discharged for disability at Nashville, Tennessee, on Dec. 26th, 1862. These papers describe him as 29 years old, of dark complexion, with grey eyes and black hair, 5' 3-1/4" tall, that he was born in Ohio and that he was a farmer.

He died on 7 Apr 1893 in Mason City, IA. He was buried in Mason City Cemetery.

Dave Cole proposes to leave in a short time for the West. Dave is a good neighbor, and his loss will be sincerely regretted by all his friends. He moved most of his family to Loup City, Custer Co., Nebraska in 1881. (Tim Cole info)
