Thaddeus P. ''Ted'' Gooding, 88, formerly of Sunset Road died Saturday at Mountain View Acres, where he had resided since 1993.

He was born in Yarmouth, a son of William and Emily Wood Gooding, and attended Yarmouth and Freeport schools. He moved to Springvale in 1927 and worked in local shoe shops. He later worked at the South Portland shipyards as a burner during World War II.

He and his brother-in-law, Roland Goodwin, owned and operated Homelite Chainsaw and the Mobil Service Station in Springvale. He retired in the early 1970s, and enjoyed gardening and selling produce locally. In his earlier years, he was an amateur boxer in the Sanford-Springvale area. He enjoyed outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing.

Mr. Gooding was predeceased by his first wife, Hazel Kallock Gooding in 1939, and by his second wife, Helen Goodwin Gooding in 1990. Also, a daughter, Janice Sawyer, died in 1974.

He is survived by three daughters, Jean Michaud of Old Orchard Beach, Glendine Anderson of Hollis and Rachel Hall of Alfred; two sisters, Evelyn Cunningham of Acton, Mass., and Grace Verdone of Hudson, Mass.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Heald Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Springvale. The Rev. Ron Sargent will officiate. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Springvale.
