L/cpl 2126 Riley, Australian Infantry, 35th Btn, was the son of Cornelius and Harriet Riley, of Stewarts Brook, New South Wales, Australia. He was born in Scone, New South Wales.

L/Cpl Riley enlisted in West Maitland NSW and embarked at Sydney for France on 24th August 1916. He was wounded on the 18th February 1917, recovered and went back to the front. He was promoted to L/Cpl on 19th February 1918 and again wounded in action on the 22nd August 1918 (thigh). L/Cpl Riley was admitted to the 3rd Southern General Hospital in Oxford and died of his wounds on the 11th September 1918. His friend, Miss Charlton of 138 Milburn Street, Carlisle, Cumberland was present at his death.
The Reverend Napier Clovering conducted his funeral and the 'last post was sounded'. He was 32.

The plot and headstone in Gundy cemetery placed for James' sister Louisa (who died in 1906) and shared with his father (who was to die almost 10 years later in 1928) also memorialise his sacrifice.
