Fort Dodge Messenger, November 6, 1937-Finger Infection Causes Death Of J. A. McIntyre
James A. McIntyre, 60, well known Fort Dodge grocer, died at 7 o'clock this morning at Mercy hospital following an illness of several weeks with a streptococcus infection. His illness began with an injury to his finger, which became infected. He entered the hospital September 13 and after several weeks was able to return to his home. The improvement was of short duration, however, and he was forced to return to the hospital October 28 when the streptococcus infection developed. Since that time he has failed rapidly and it was known for several days that he could not get well. As a young man, Mr. McIntyre worked for D. E. Leary and Charles Peterson, pioneer grocers in Fort Dodge. After several years with them he entered into a partnership with Terrence Mallon and they opened the McIntyre and Mallon grocery store in 1904. The partnership continued until 1914 when Mr. McIntyre went into business for himself. He continued in the grocery business until his death. Known as "Jimmie" to all of his friends, Mr. McIntyre, in turn knew all of his friends and acquaintances by their first names and took great pleasure in calling them by name. His acquaintances were almost unnumbered because of the many with whom he came in contact during his years in business and his wide circle of friends were a constant source of enjoyment of him. Kindly in manner and always with a desire to please his friendship gave pleasure to many and he was well liked by everyone.
James A. McIntyre, age 29, son of Patrick and Catherine (Burns) McIntyre married Martha A. Bowen, age 22, daughter of Philip and Nora (O'Connell) Bowen on August 16, 1906 by Father H. P. Rohlman, Pastor of Sacred Heart Church. The ceremony was witness by Emmet O'Connor, cousin of the groom and Margaret Bowen, sister of the bride.
His wife, Martha and two children, Bowen McIntyre and Miss Catherine McIntyre of this city, survive him. One grandchild James L. McIntyre, a sister Mrs. W. H. McGuire, and a brother, Edward McIntyre, all of Fort Dodge, also survive him. Two infant daughters, Mary, died in 1908 and Margaret died in 1909. Mr. McIntyre was a member of the Knights of Columbus for a number of years and at one time was a grand knight of the local council.
