Fredele H. "Speed" Berggren, 96, died Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Dogwood Health Care Center, Sandwich.
Fredele, known as "Speed" to his fiends since he was a boy, was born August 20, 1905 in Sheridan, Illinois. He was the son of Otto and Mary (Eagle) Berggren of Sandwich.
As a young boy growing up in Sandwich, "Speed" worked with his father delivering ice before school in a horse drawn wagon. He also had a paper route. Having the greatest number of papers, he was last to leave, yet was always the first to finish his route, thus the nickname "Speed".
"Speed" held a variety of jobs, shoe repair, skate repair at the Sandwich Roller Rink, even worked digging graves at the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Eventually he hired on the Federal Huber in Plano where he worked until his retirement in the 1970's.
During World War II, "Speed" was drafted into the Army. He served honorably with the 5th Army throughout North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France, where he received three bronze stars. "My one regret was I never got to see Paris," he said. explaining he was sent home when his company was just twelve miles outside the Paris city limits.
He was predeceased by his brother, Donald; and his sisters, Hazel Rogers, Minnie Weber, Margaret Rohrer; and his wife, Helen Hansen Berggren.
He is survived by his son, Daniel Berggren Region of Hudson, N.Y.; step sons, John Hansen of Sheridan, Michael Hansen and step daughter, Mary Hansen Luber of Oswego; his granddaughter, Heather Berggren of Cincinnati, OH; and several nieces and nephews; including Donald Morgan of Roscoe and Judy Rohrer of Sandwich.
