John D Symington, Jr. served in the Civil War. He served from 1863 to 1865 as a private in the 38th Battalion Virginia Light Artillery – CSA. In 1867, he graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore, MD. He came to become the leading physician and surgeon in the New Mexico Territory and the friend of every army officer who served in that territory from 1874 until his death in 1896.

John Borradaile Colligan, who inherited the family papers of Ambrosio Armijo (1817-1882), states in his unpublished memoirs, "The History of the Armijo's of New Mexico", that both Dr. John D. Symington, Jr. and his wife, Maria Teresa de Jesus Armijo Symington Pratt, were buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland. However, a photo volunteer had searched this plot three times between September 2010 and June 2011 and could not find a marker. In June 2012, another FAG contributor sent me a copy of the Area U Lot 58 Plot Card from Green Mount Cemetery which clearly indicates they are, in fact, buried there. John D. Symington, Jr. is clearly on the Lot Card. He appears as John Symington and he was buried 25 May 1894. His wife, Maria Teresa de Jesus Armijo Symington Pratt is clearly on the Lot Card. She appears as Teresa Armijo Pratt and was buried 15 Mar 1940.
