Dr. William Butt, 65, Professor Emeritus of Economic at the College, died In Longmont, Colorado yesterday. Dr. Butt who retired from Penn State on Jan 4 1948 after 28 service died after suffering a heart attack while driving his car in that northern Colorado City. He apparently turned off the ignition after being stricken and the auto coasted to a stop in a residence driveway. Born Jan. 3, 1888 in Woodburn the son of James Ranklin and Lucretia Johnson Butt. He was married Sept. 8, 1913 to Inga Olson who survives with two children, Olin of Bellefonte and Mrs. William Day Jr., Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Butt attended Indiana University and received his BA and MA degree from the University of Wisconsin and his Doctor of Philosophy from Yale University. He served as instructor and assistant professor of economics at the University of Kentucky from 1913 until 1920 when he came to Penn State as Assistant Professor of Economics. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1927 and to Professor of Economics in 1931. He was a member of the American Economy Association National Tax Association, American Statistical Association and of the Masonic Lodge and the Acacia Fraternity following his retirement in 1948. He and his wife moved to Longmont, Colorado. Funeral arrangements were not completed.
