Death of George W. Rice, Civil War Veteran
George W. Rice, who enlisted in Co. F. 25th Massachusetts regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War, died at his home in Hillsville, near Spencer, Wednesday morning, aged 76 years, four months 15 days. Mr. Rice had been ill but a short time, and death was due to heart trouble. At the outbreak of the war, Mr. Rice was employed in the Dickinson Shoe Factory and was one of the first to volunteer for service in the 2th regiment. He served his time and then enlisted in the Vermont cavalry at Montpelier.
While a member of the 25th regiment Mr. Rice was wounded in the battle of Roanoke Island. He was born in Carlisle, son of Hosea and Susan (Robbins) Rice and spent the early part of his life in Vernon, VT. He was married in 1863 to Nancy S. Green, who died Dec. 1, 1877. He has lived in this city, Manville and Leicester, but for the last seven years had made his home at Hillsville, in Spencer. He was a member of George H. Thomas post, G.A.R. of Leicester, and was well known to the veterans of this city.
The funeral was held Friday afternoon, from the A. E. Kingsley chapel with Rev. William M Crawford of Leominster, formerly of Spencer, officiating. The George H. Thomas ritual was used and the body left this morning for Vernon, VT, where it will be placed in the tomb in that town. He is survived by two sons, George S. and Charles F. Rice of Worcester, two brothers, Augustus P. Rice of Worcester and Edwin C. Rice of Metcalf and four sisters, Mrs. Harriet Houghton, Baldwinvillle; Mrs. Charlotte Whittaker, Athol; Mrs. J. E, C, Francis, Kewanee, Ill., and Mrs. A. Spencer of Sterling. He is also survived by five grandchildren.
