Maude and Victoria were actually not Martin's. Their father was a Zack Starnes from Union County, North Carolina. With DNA testing we have determined he was descended from the Frederick Starnes line, but still don't know specifically who his parents were.

However, Starnes disappeared around the time that Victoria was born (about 1894) and was never seen again. Maude's mother went back to using the name Martin several years later.
