John, age 54, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 1 May 1861 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company E, 14th North Carolina Infantry. On 5 August 1862, John was discharged by reason of the conscription Act. He was described as follows when discharged: born Orange County, North Carolina; age 56; 5 feet and 10 inches tall; dark complexion, eyes and hair; occupation - planter. (info by Family Search) On March 1, at the North Carolina Soldiers' Home there was celebrated the 100th birthday of John M. Pool, of Wake County, a Mexican and Civil War veteran, the oldest man in the home, where he has been since 1892. During the Civil War he was a member of Company E, Fourteenth Regiment. (Western Sentinel, March 3, 1911, p. 6)

John M. Pool died as the result of a fall from the porch of the Soldier's Home a week before his death. He was almost totally blind. He was born in Durham county, but had lived most of his life in Wake. He is survived by his 2nd wife and 3 children. (The Monroe Journal, June 11, 1912, p. 1)
