Charlie F Branch, 41, died at the Cotton Belt Hospital last night from injuries received Monday afternoon when stuck by a switch engine in the local Cotton Belt yards. Mr Branch’s injuries were not regarded as serious at the time of the accident. He was taken to Davis Hospital where he was treated for severe bruises, and Tuesday morning he was taken to Texarkana for treatment and observation there. Internal injuries are thought to have been the cause of death.
Mr Branch was stuck by the footboard of a switch engine, which was backing a load of six cars, while he was acting in his capacity of car inspector in the local yards. He was knocked to the ground beneath the footboard but was not stuck by the wheels of the engine.
A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Mr. Branch had been in the Cotton Belt service for 18 years.
He was born on April 20, 1902 at Double Wells, Ark., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Branch.
Mr. Branch went to work in the car department at the Cotton Belt Railway company in 1925 and was promoted to car inspector in September 1942.
He was a lifelong member of the Providence Baptist Church and was a leader in the activities of the church.
In addition to his wife, Miss Birtie Taylor, he is survived by two daughters, Mildred and Louise Branch; four sons, Chester, Alvin, Edward and Donald Branch of Double Wells; two brothers, George Branch and E. O. Branch of Double Wells; three nieces, two nephews and a number of other relatives.
The body will arrive here this afternoon at 4:55 o’clock from Texarkana.
