BENDA--Mrs. Caroline Benda Dies – Mrs. Caroline Benda 82, passed away yesterday at 11 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic home for aged people at West Point, where she has been making her home for the last six months. Mrs Benda has been in impaired health for the last two years suffering from kidney trouble and complications incident to advanced age. A few days ago she suffered a slight stroke which hastened her death.
As Caroline Hekil she was born April 22, 1848 in Neustatt, Austria, where she was married to Leopold Benda on Sept. 12, 1870. In 1878 she came with her husband and family to America and settled in Polk county on a farm out of Shelby where they lived until 1920 when they moved into Shelby.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died in December, 1927. Following that she resided with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Birkel, of David City for two and one-half years, and then entered the Catholic home at West Point. Besides Mrs. Birkel, of David City, she is survived by nine sons, Hubert, Herman, Leopold, Alfred and Ernest, of Shelby; Bert, Arthur and Otto, of Hemingford; and John, of Fremont, 27 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral services will be held in Shelby at 2:30 p.m. Thursday from the United Brethren church, and burial will be made in the Shelby cemetery. The body was brought to the Gass funeral home last night, and will be removed tomorrow to the home of her son Hubert Benda, at Shelby.
