Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the West Point in 1852 and served in the 2nd US Infantry as a the regimental quartermaster officer. When the Civil War began in 1861, he was promoted Colonel assigned to commissary duty in Missouri. In 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General commissary chief of the Army of the Tennessee. He was transferred to Louisiana and given command of District of Northeastern Louisiana along with a brigade of US Colored Troops, in February 1864. In command of the 1st Division US Colored Troops, he joined the Union garrison at Vicksburg, Mississippi and took part in the siege of Mobile, Alabama. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on June 30, 1865. After the war he remained in the Regular Army and retired Commissary General of Subsistence in 1894.
