Officer Daniel R. Jakiela III, 27, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2009.

Born in New Haven on Nov. 24, 1981, he was the son of Daniel R. Jakiela, Jr. and Marri (Hugo) Mostad and the stepson of Danielle Meyer Jakiela and Ted Mostad. He spent his childhood in Wallingford and graduated in 2000 from Mark T. Sheehan High School, where he was a powerful presence on the football team. Following graduation from the Connecticut Police Academy in 2004, he joined his father in service as a police officer for the City of Meriden. A popular and promising addition to the force, Officer Jakiela was twice commended for service beyond the call of duty.

Noted for his ability to listen to others and his affection and concern for children, he was assigned in 2008 as Resource Officer to Maloney High School, where he was widely know and well liked among both students and staff. Officer Jakiela also coached Pop Warner Football and was a frequent presence at sporting events and other youth-oriented activities, exerting a strong positive influence in the lives of youths throughout the City of Meriden. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and an avid Giants fan, and he enjoyed spending time on Block Island with friends and family. Through both professional and personal contacts, he was a helpful, warm, and welcoming presence in the lives of many, and he will be greatly missed.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his great-grandmother, Frances Polchopek, of Meriden; his paternal grandfather, Daniel Jakiela, Sr., of Florida; two aunts, Dawn Jakiela, of Meriden and Debbie Quagliaro and her husband, Dan, of Wallingford; three sisters, Nicole Tresselt, Shawna Jakiela and Kristan Jakiela; two brothers, Jason Jakiela and Bobby Rickey; a niece, Mya Rose Jakiela; and his closest cousin, Heather Gish; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Frances Jakiela; and maternal grandparents, Thomas and Nancy Hugo.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian burial with the Rev. Shawn Daly officiating. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, Thursday, from 3 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in his memory may be made to the Meriden Police Explorers, c/o Meriden Police Dept, 50 West Main St., Meriden, CT 06451.
