Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1845, as a ordnance officer and served in the war with Mexico. He resigned from the Army in 1856 and from 1857 to 1860, was chief of the scientific commission for the survey and exploration of the state of Sonora, Mexico. At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel of the 14th US Infantry in charge of the defenses of Washington D. C. He led a brigade in General Robert Patterson's operations in the Shenandoah valley and commanded the corps of observation of the Army of the Potomac in 1862. He participated in the siege of Port Hudson in July, 1863, the campaign of Bayou Teche, Louisiana, in October, 1863, the Red River campaign in April, 1864 and was promoted Brigadier General. After the war, he was engineer and superintendent of the Dover mining company in Gooch-land county, Virginia and was a member of the Institute Egyptian of Research at Cairo.
