Civil War Union Brigadier General. A native of Connecticut, he had practiced law in New York and Iowa before entering the military. After initial service in Missouri with his regiment he was appointed to staff duty and fought at the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth, and through the Vicksburg Campaign. In the latter and in the later 1864 Atlanta Campaign he served as Major General James B. McPherson's adjutant and received the brevet of Brigadier General for the Battle of Atlanta where his chief was killed. During the Carolinas Campaign he was given a line command as an acting Brigadier General and was brevetted to Major General of Volunteers at the close of the war, as well as to the full rank of Brigadier General. He was later posted in Texas, and after being mustered out of Army service was elected as a Republican to represent Texas's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1869 to 1872.
