Her mother died when was only twelve. When she was thirteen her oldest sister was shot and killed by their father. At fourteen her father was hanged in the public square for his murderous actions. She and her remaining three sisters all experienced multiple marriages. Her only brother also married and divorced. Her youngest sister, Pearl, was at age 13 labeled incorrigible and placed in a state facility. In a planned escape, in which she was labeled the ringleader, a group of three girls, set fire to the building they were being housed in.
