News of the death of Dr. Thomas A. Martin, 73, a member of the family for whom the town of Martin's Mill was named, has been received here. Dr. Martin died last Saturday at his home in Loraine, Texas. He was a pioneer physician of Mitchell county.
Beginning his practice at an early age in East Texas, Dr. Martin first traveled to patients by horseback, later by horse and buggy. He practiced in Oklahoma and Grand Saline before moving to Loraine in 1907. He was one of the first Mitchell county doctors to use an automobile.
Dr. Martin was born July 19, 1866 in Talledaga county Alabama, moving to Van Zandt county Texas with his family when a boy. Martin's Mill in Van Zandt county is named for the family. He received his degree in medicine from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.
Survivors are his widow and five sons; S.A. Martin of Colorado City, W.R., C.H. and T.K. Martin of Loraine and R.D. Martin of Littlefield; two brothers, Sam Martin, St. Jo. and Frank Martin, Arlington and a sister, Mrs. Emma Donnell, El Paso.
Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Sunday at the Loraine Methodist Church.
