Norma Saylor
Norma Jean Saylor, 86, of Walla Walla, passed away Sept. 13, 2010, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla.
Norma was born May 11, 1924, in Columbia County to Bert and Ruby A. Wilson Sanford. She attended the Columbia country school and graduated from Dayton High School in the class of 1942. She loved music and dancing and met Samuel A. "Andy" Saylor at one of the grange hall dances at Willow Creek. They were married July 11, 1942, in Lewiston, Idaho. The couple made their home on the wheat farm in Hay, Wash., and raised two children, Rosemarie and Timothy.
Norma was the true definition of a hard working women and a devoted mother. Her passions in life included golf, bowling, waterskiing, gardening and spending time with her family. During the harvest season, Norma could be found preparing meals, serving as a fill in truck driver and fetching various equipment parts to keep the operation moving. Her garden was second to none; and it fed most of the harvest crew and her family throughout the year. Though Norma worked hard, she always had time for her family. She was active in 4-H in home crafts. Norma played the accordion and the organ and she gave accordion lessons until she broke her arm and was unable to play anymore.
Norma as a devoted mother was very caring, loving, independent, and protective. Though she loved her children and grandchildren, the apple of her eye was her great-granddaughter who came later in her life, Madison Marie. Her time spent with her was very special and Norma looked forward to seeing her.
Norma was a member of the Walla Walla Country Club, Daughters of the Pioneers and a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Norma is survived by her husband of 68 years, S. "Andy" Saylor at the home; daughter, Rosemarie and Dick Ames of Spokane; sister, Elnora "Maxine" Dean of Pittsburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Shannon Ames Billigmeier (Travis) of Cheney, Wash., and Shane Ames of Spokane; numerous nieces and nephews and one great-grandchild, Madison Marie of Cheney. Norma is preceded in death by her parents and son, Timothy L. Saylor (1973).
