Chico Daily Record, Monday, May 9, 1904, page 5, col 4: Death Last Night of James T. Day. A Resident of Butte County For Half a Century Has Been Summoned. For Over Thirty Years a Resident of Chico, Where He Followed the Avocation of Mason and Cement Worker. Just before 10 o’clock last night James T. Day, a pioneer of Butte county, and for over thirty years a resident of Chico, passed away at the home of his son, J.W. Day, on Olive street, between Ninth and Humboldt avenue, after an long and painful illness, his complaint having been dropsy. Dr. Day had been a sufferer from this malady for nearly a year, but it was not until about six weeks ago that the ravages of the disease compelled him to take to his bed. Since that time it has been evident to his relatives and friends that the end could not long be delayed and while many of his old friends and companions of half a century will grieve at his passing, the announcement will not be unexpected.

James T. Day was born in Warren, Marion county, Missouri, in 1836, where he spent his childhood days until about 1854 he came across the plains to California, settling in Butte county. For a number of years he followed farming and cattle raising, being the owner of a ranch near Cana, but about thirty years ago he moved to the neighborhood of Chico, where he had since lived, principally following the business of mason and cement worker, being one of the pioneers in that line in this city and having engaged in the construction of most of the older buildings in the town.

Deceased leaves three sisters and two brothers in the old home at Warren, Mo., and four sons and one daughter in California, one son having died at Red Bluff about six weeks ago, by a coincidence at the same moment of the same day of the week that the father’s demise occurred. These children are: Frank, J.W. and Louis Day of Chico; William Day and Mrs. John Mersch of Los Angeles.

The funeral will take place from the Bicknell undertaking parlors on Tuesday at an hour yet to be set.
