Henry was the oldest son of Arndt & Louise Sophie Dorothea (Niedfeld) Stratmann. His full German name was Heinrich Stratmann. Henry emigrated to America with his parents and siblings, arriving in the Port of Baltimore on 15 Apr 1871 on board the S.S. Ohio from Bremen, Germany.

Henry married Mary Sander, daughter of Heinrich F and Margarethe Charlotte (Husmann) Sander, on 4 July 1884 in La Crosse. Mary was a half-sister to Emma (Sander) Nielsen, who is also buried in Springfield Cemetery along with her husband Adolph Nielsen.
