SODDEN DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT
Bradner J. Blake, of Livonia, Aged 84 Years.
Livonia, Feb. 3. — Bradner J. Blake, one of this town's oldest and beet known residents, died suddenly at the home of his son, Jesse Blake, in this village, late yesterday afternoon, at the age of 84 years. Mr. Blake had been in failing health for some time, but had been able to be up and around as usual, and yesterday morning walked down street. He had a poor spell before he reached home and had to be helped to the house. He afterward rallied yet late in the afternoon he became worse and his death came about 5:30, the immediate cause being heart failure.
Bradner J. Blake was the son of Jesse and Sallie Luddington Blake and was the youngest and last surviving member of a family of fourteen children. Jesse Blake was the son of Richard Blake of Litchfield county, Connecticut, who served as a soldier during the Revolutionary war, and Jesse was born at that place August 31, 1773. In 1798 he was married to Sallie Luddington, who's father acted as one of Washington's body guard.
In 1798 he "articled" for a portion of lot No. 42 in the town of Livonia, then known as Pittstown. He was among the first settlers of the town, coming with his family and his household effects on an ox sled in 1800. Jesse Blake was a man possessing great powers of endurance, industrious to a remarkable degree, and eminently fitted for the life of toil and hardships, which he had undertaken. At the time of his death be owned four hundred acres of fine improved land. He died September 17, 1859.
Bradner J. Blake was born October 4, 1822, on what was known as Blake street. He was married to Elisabeth Smith. also of this town, February 28. 1847. Two children were born to them, one of whom died when young. Mr. Blake was prominent in political affairs of both the town and county, from 1861 to 1865, during the Civil war, being the supervisor, of this town, and largely throw his efforts, only one draft for men was made necessary from this town, in some of the other towns of the county it being necessary to make two and even three.
Mrs. Blake died March 17, 1889 and shortly after Mr. Blake came to this village, where he has since resided with his son. On the 28th of June last, hes was given a party by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jesse Blake which was attended by nine of Mr. Blake's old friends and acquaintances, all of whom were over 90 years of age, and whose combined age amounted to 761 years. Mr. Blake is the second one of this party to pass away. Joseph Mather, the oldest of those assembled having died about the first of September, at the age of 96. Mr. Blake was a man widely known and highly respected by all who knew him.
