JAMES M. ATWELL

James M. Atwell, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Atwell, was born near Confidence, Wayne county, Iowa, on March 14, 1899, and passed away at Lansing, Mich., on June 21, 1951, at the age of 52 years.

He received his early education in Wayne county, and later taught school for several years in both Wayne and Lucas counties.

On June 10, 1924, he was married to the former Mable Stone of Chariton, and to this union was born one daughter, Bonnie Marlene.

He was a former county treasurer of Lucas county, and later engaged in the shoe business in Chariton and Oskaloosa. For the past eight years he has been business manager of the Edward Sparrow hospital in Lansing, Mich.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge No. 63 of Chariton, Fraternal Order of Eagles at Lansing, the Michigan Hospital Association, and the American Hospital Association.

He is survived by the widow, Mable, daughter, Bonnie Hemsworth and husband and grandson, Jimmy of Berwyn, Ill.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Atwell, and a sister, Mrs. C. L. Colver of Chariton, a brother, Herman of Des Moines, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Services were held at the Beardsley funeral home Sunday, June 24, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. D. G. Holman officiated and burial was made in the Chariton cemetery.
