Mrs. Lula Simmons Shattles, wife of Henry S. Shattles died at her home of what was believed to be a heart attack, about 5:00 a.m. March 14, 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Shattles live on the Charlie Bass place northwest of Poplarville, on the Columbia and Poplarville Highway. Having recently moved (2 months) here from Brooklyn. Mrs. Shattles was preparing to start a fire in the cook stove when she was stricken and fell to the floor where Mr. Shattles found her when he awoke about 5:30 a.m. The family had planned to return to Brooklyn for a visit on this day.
Mrs. Shattles was the daughter of Ellis Simmons and the late Mary Lee Simmons was born in Rock Hill Community of Forrest County July 7th, 1888.
She is survived by her father, Ellis Simmons, her widower 7 children; Wm. H. Shattles, Pasadena, Texas, Garner V. Shattles, Pasadena, Texas, Mrs. D. M. Miller, Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas, Gordon H. Shattles, Brooklyn, Miss, Henry S. Shattles, Jr., Poplarville, Miss Dorothy Shattles and Miss Marguerite Shattles, of Poplarville; 5 sisters, Mrs. D. A. Hogan, Purvis, Mrs. Z. T. Pearce, Brooklyn, Mrs. Effie Lee, Lumberton, Mrs. Herbert Lee and Mrs. Ione Schroeder both of Brooklyn; 4 brothers, W. C. Simmons, A. B. Simmons and R. M. Simmons of Brooklyn, and E. C. Simmons of Hattiesburg.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Brooklyn Baptist Church of which Mrs. Shattles was a member, with Rev. J. H. Cothen conducting services, assisted by Rev. D. A. Hoan.
Interment was in the Brooklyn Cemetery. Pall bearers were Loyd Smith, Edd Boone, Ty Pearce, Bennie F. Simmons, Wilbur Martin and Carl Boone.
