LEVI POOR, 93, PIONEER, DIES
Death Comes to Man Who Homesteaded in 1893 in McPherson County.
A pioneer homesteader in McPherson county thirty-five years ago and for many years a resident of Broken Bow, Levi Poor, 93, died at 5:15 Friday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.L. Beal, 4211 Holdrege street. He had made his home in Lincoln for the past five years.
Mr. Poor was born near Chicago, May 1, 1835. Shortly before the outbreak of the Civil war he married and moved to Audrain county, Missouri, later going to Sumner, Mo. He became a large land-owner in that vicinity.
Thirty-five years ago he went to McPherson county, Nebraska, and settled on a homestead in the Dismal river country. After proving up on the land he moved to Broken Bow where his daughter, Mrs. Beal lived until the fall of 1923. Although he made his home with this daughter he managed a farm of his own until 1920, when he was 85 years old.
Each year of the five that he spent in Lincoln, except the last, Mr. Poor had planted and cared for his own garden and until recent months was accustomed to take long walks about the city. While his health had not been good for several months he formerly read newspapers and magazines avidly and took a keen interest in the affairs of the day.
On the first of last May, twenty of Mr. Poor's relatives gathered at the Beal home to celebrate his ninety-third birthday anniversary with a dinner party.
Mr. Poor is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Beal; Mrs. S.E. Harrington of Greenwood, Mo.; Mrs. Alice Heilig of Chicago; Mrs. Walter Nail of Peru, Ind.; Mrs. Grace Sumate and Miss Mayme Poor of Moberly, Mo.; one son, Edward Poor of Moberly; and a number of grandchildren.
The body is being held at Hodgman's chapel pending funeral arrangements.
