William Way married, first, Betty Thomas, 23 December 1819, in Randolph County, Indiana. He married, second, Mrs. Mahala Mason, the widow of Thomas Mason, on 18 August 1864, in Sauk County, Wisconsin. He and Mahala were in Gratiot, Lafayette County, Wisconsin when the 1870 census was taken, but two years later they moved to Iowa.

William Way of Reeve Township, Franklin County, Iowa, wrote his will on 23 June 1873. He said that he was 78 years old. His legatees were his grandson, C. O. Way, his wife, Mahala, and his children, I. T. Way, Achsah Ann Fraser, Lydia M. Brown and Mary Jane Harriman.

When I. T. Way and J. W. Meyers applied for administration of the estate, they reported that Wm. Way died on 15 July 1873, although the date on his tombstone appears to be 1 July 1873. The grandson, C. O. Way, was Charles O. Way who signed a receipt included in the probate file. (Franklin County, Iowa, probate file 133)
