Enlisted Oct. 14, 1861, as Sergeant.
Mustered Nov. 2, 1861.
Missing in action April 6, 1862, Shiloh, Tenn.

Promoted Second Lieutenant March 15, 1863.
Appointed First Lieutenant Nov. 19, 1864.
Mustered out Aug. 8, 1865, Davenport, Iowa.

Based on enlistment, his service included battles of Ft Henry,Tn(Feb 6), Ft Donelson,Tn(Feb 16) and Shiloh,TN(Apr 6-7, 1862). The 8th, 12th & 14th Iowa comprised 4/5ths of the troops in "The Hornet's Nest" at Shiloh. They held their ground for 10 hours against attack after attack allowing the Union time to bring reinforcements to rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. Finally surrounded by 10 times their number and out of ammunition they had no choice but to throw down their arms and surrender only to see many of their number shot down with their arms in the air. The majority of all three regiments were captured. The enlisted men were sent to various prisons in Alabama & Georgia suffering great privation. They were paroled and exchanged at various times in 1862. In 1863, the 14th was reunited and reorganized at Davenport,IA. Duty at Cairo,IL until Jan 1864. Participated in the Red River Campaign Mar 10 – May 22 1864. This included Ft DeRussey, Battle of Pleasant Hill, Cane River Crossing, Occupation of Alexandria, Mansura. March through Arkansas and Missouri in pursuit of Price Sep 17 –Oct 25. Unit members enlisted in 1861 mustered out Nov 16 1864. New recruits and some veterans were consolidated to two companies and assigned duty at Springfield,IL til Aug 1865. (Info from "The Union Army" published 1908)

Beach, Alfred A. Age 21.(possibly his brother), same residence, nativity, enlisted same day into same company. Promoted Principal Musician Sept. 1, 1863. Mustered out Nov. 16, 1864,Davenport, Iowa.

Thomas Boyd Beach, age 83, veteran of the Civil War, died early Thursday morning, December 29, 1921, at his home at 2200 B Street.

Mr. Beach was born August 28, 1838, in Cumberland, Guernsey county, Ohio. He was the son of Elias Beach and Jane Allen Beach, who was a descendant of Ethan Allen. His father, Elias Beach, was a descendant of Benjamin Chandler, who was killed in the Battle of Bennington, August 6, 1777, by a Tory who had rallied to the support of the British commander.

Thomas B. Beach was educated at Howe's Academy, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He enlisted in Co. F 14th Iowa Infantry, October 14, 1861, and was promoted to second lieutenant March 17, 1863. He fought at Ft. Donelson in February, 1862 ,n Shiloh, Tenn. in April, 1862, and was wounded and captured with his regiment and held prisoner of war at Libby prison until Oct. 17, 1863. He served in the battles of Ft. DeRussy, Pleasant Hill, Marksville Plains, Yellow Bayou, Lake Chicot, Ark., Tupelo, Miss., Old Town Creek, Miss., and during skirmishes on Red River and Mississippi campaigns. He was mustered out Nov. 9, 1864, and mustered in as first lieutenant, Co. B, Residuary battalion, 14th Iowa Infantry, Nov. 19, 1864. He was mustered out August 24, 1865.

Mr. Beach was married to Mariah Carmean, Dec. 26, 1865. His wife and two daughters, Miss Mary Beach and Mrs. W. J. Byer, survive him; one daughter Vinnie having passed away in 1914.

Thomas B. Beach has been very prominent in the G.A.R. circles. He was commander of Farragut Post in 1904 and later as senior vice commander, adjutant and officer of the day.

The body is being held at Robert's funeral parlors. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
