John Russel Burgreen, Sr., age 78, Carl Junction, passed away at 11:16 p.m. Monday, September 13, 2010 at Freeman West Hospital.

John was born September 27, 1931 in Watson, West Virginia to the late L.H. Burgreen and Georgie Fuller Burgreen and had lived in the Joplin area for several years moving from Southeast Kansas.

John graduated from Fairmont High School, Fairmont, West Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia at Morgantown in 1951. He entered the United States Navy in 1952 and was discharged with honorable distinction in 1964. He served in the Korean War.

John served as a United Methodist minister for over 30 years in both Ohio and Kansas. He was very active in the Lions Club. He served as past president of the Columbus, Kansas Lions Club and was past District Governor of 17-S, Southeast Kansas.

John married Elizabeth Louise "Betty' Miller. Together they had four children.

He then married Elizabeth Ann Reedy on May 20, 2000 in Pittsburg, Kansas. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include his children, John Burgreen, Jr., Lawrenceville, Virginia, Mary Stites, New Mexico, Joseph Burgreen, Jr, Meriden, Kansas, Ellen McKenny, Oak Harbour, Washington; one step son, Dan Engler, Springfield, Missouri; one step daughter, Margaret Engler, Colorado, Springs, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 1 step grandson; and one brother, Hartley Burgreen, Grafton, West Virginia.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert.

John has been taken for cremation. Memorial services are planned at Carl Junction United Methodist at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
