Bertha was born in Dadiure, Bern, Switzerland in 1911. She came to the United States on the Ship Europa from Switzerland and entered New York City. She was quarantined on the sea voyage with Scarlet Fever. She stayed in the hospital in New York for "what seemed like a very long time"....

After leaving New York, her family went to Missouri and then Oregon.
