Sammie H. Brown, co-owner of Young Fashions, "Mr. Sammie " clothed almost every young man in Baton Rouge for 30 years. He died at 8:35 a.m. Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was 79 and retired. He was born in Watson, Ark., and grew up in Winnsboro before coming to LSU in 1935 on a baseball scholarship. He also competed as a member of the LSU track team. He met and married his wife of 58 years, Melba Cruvant. He served in the U.S. Army artillery in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a past president of Edgewater Kiwanis Cub. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, Acacia Shrine Temple and a past master of St. James Masonic Lodge. He was active in his synagogue and received the President's award for service to his congregation. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., 4 p.m. until Masonic services at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services at B'nai Israel Synagogue at noon Wednesday, conducted by Rabbi Barry Weinstein.

Survived by wife, Melba Cruvant Brown ; his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Brown Hanchey and Carl H. Hanchey, Lake Charles; a son and daughter-in-law, Randall Brown , M.D., and wife, Deborah Chenevert Brown ; his five grandchildren, Lisa Hanchey, David Hanchey and wife, Karen B. Hanchey, Ashley Brown , Allison Brown and Kimberly Brown ; and his three great-grandchildren, Brian, Scott and Kristen Hanchey.

Preceded in death by parents, Harry S. Brown and Eva Seifter Brown ; his brother Leon Brown , who died in combat during World War II; and his two sisters, Sara Brown Neiman and Marie Brown Goetschel.

Pallbearers will be Judge William H. Brown , David Hanchey, Carl Hanchey, Phil Washauer, Milton Ford Cook and Mark Washauer. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Martin, Ernest Dampf, Jay Washauer, Richard Robin, M.D., Richard Lipsey, I.D. Newmark, Phillip Newmark, Mark Newmark and Robert Blumberg
