Although her given name was Mary, she used the name "Polly" which everyone knew her as. In later years she gained the nickname "Aunt Polly".
Married at an extremely young age to William Peaslie Hiatt, who chose her at random off the street to propose to after his first wife passed away. They had a small and primitive plantation in Renfro Valley, KY. In 1865, her husband was found dead in the plantation's log-storage barn, under mysterious circumstances.
Mary Hiatt ran the small and primitive plantation by herself until her own death in 1898. The original location of the house was just across the road where part of Lake Linville currently exists. When I-75 was built, the lake was dammed in such a way that the old Hiatt Plantation would be flooded and the house destroyed, so John Lair acted fast to save the house and transport it across the street to its present location next to the Renfro Valley Barn Dance tourist attraction. The house is widely regarded to be haunted.
