Note: Herman's birthplace on most of the federal census reports list him as being born in Maine. He was actually born in Jaffa, Palestine. His family immigrated there as part of a religious quest which ended in what they considered failure. The American Colony in Israel/Palestine that Mark Twain wrote about in his book, Innocents Abroad, refers to this group of visionaries who had the courage to act on their beliefs and follow their dreams.
