Lillian Johnson, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home.

Lillian Ruth was born May 2, 1910 in Hallock, one of seven children of Carl and Anna (Bengtson) Nelson. She learned Swedish in her home as she grew up and attended school in Hallock, then worked there in a telephone office until she moved to Plentywood, Mont. in 1943.

She worked at the Rexall drug store for several years, and then at Dr.

Pronin's office. After her marriage to Archie Johnson Nov. 19, 1950 they lived on the farm in the Outlook community.

She was baptized Sept. 21, 1910 and confirmed Oct. 24, 1926 in Hallock; and joined the Plentywood Lutheran Church June 6, 1954. She and Archie attended church both in Outlook and in Plentywood.

Lillian loved her life on the farm, and while she enjoyed cooking and baking, she was non-traditional in some ways: she said "every woman should know how to use a hammer," and enjoyed carpentry and building projects.

When Archie retired in 1975 they moved into Plentywood, to a new home (largely custom built by Lillian's brother, Leonard) where she lived until she entered the nursing home. Family was the focal point of Lillian's life; and she stayed in close touch with family in Sweden and Minnesota.

She and Archie enjoyed traveling, and visited in Sweden as well as number of U.S. destinations. Although she never had children, Lillian was a big part of the lives of "her kids" - especially several generations of her nieces and nephews.

Lillian is survived by her sister, Martha Walling, Plentywood; by numerous nieces and nephews through both her and Archie's families, and by many cousins, including those in Minnesota and Sweden.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Archie and by two brothers and four sisters: Roy, who died in infancy; Leonard Nelson, Nancy Johnson, Olga Mumey, Marian Smolak, and Ethelyn Engstrom.

Funeral services for Lillian Johnson were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21. Pastor David C. Curtright officiated at the service at Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Plentywood; interment of cremated remains will be in Plentywood Memorial Cemetery, with her late husband, Archie Johnson, who died Dec. 18, 1983.

Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.
