Born in Springfield Twp, which is now in Delaware county, 12 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
Son of John Slingluff and Caroline Robb. His grandfather was Heinrich Schlengeluff from Waldeck, Ansbach, Bayern, Germany.

In 1798 co-founded Bohn & Slingluff, an extensive grocery house, which continued uninterrupted until 1870.

Was a corporal in the cavalry of Capt Henry Thompson's company, Maryland, and took part in the Battle of Baltimore (1814)

President of the Bank of Westminster 1818-1821 and its director until his death.

Originally buried in the Dunker burial ground in Windsor county.

Avalon, the home he built in New Windsor, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
