John was probably born in Lurgan Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of David Coleman (born c.1796) and his unknown first wife.

John married Catherine (Eutzy/Jutzi) Coleman (28 Apr 1825 - 21 May 1889) about 1845.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, John and Catherine were living eight households away from his father in Lurgan Township, and John was a "mason." Catherine's widowed mother lived two households away from John and Catharine on the other side.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, John and Catherine were living in the Orrstown Post Office area of Lurgan Township, and John was a "m. mason." At this time, John's father lived five households away and Catherine's mother lived four households away with her married son, Charles Eutzy.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, John and Catherine were living in Hedgesville Township, Berkeley County, West Virginia, and he was a "farm laborer." I can't find John and Catharine in the 1880 U.S. Census.

The record of John and Catherine's deaths is on a hand-written piece of paper. A death certificate for John Coleman couldn't be found in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

The other known children of John and Catherine were:

1) Elizabeth Coleman (born c.1846) was born in Pennsylvania.
