Jerusha Griswold was born Sep 9 1776 near Johnstown, NY, to Francis and Chloe (Colton) Griswold. Her father, Francis Griswold, moved the family to Benton Center NY in 1794, where she married Samuel Buell in 1796. It appears that Jerusha and Samuel were 4th cousins, both descended from Edward Griswold.
Her son Elias wrote a history of the family:
"Samuel Buell born at Fort Edward or Kingsbury, October 7, 1763. Moved to Susquahannah, 1784. Moved to Benton 1792. Left Benton September 10th, arrived at Allensville, Indiana, middle of November 1816. Moved to Bartholomew County in April 1821. Samuel Buell married to Jerusha Griswold, in the town of Benton, 1796. She was born September 9, 1776, near Johnstown, New York. Her father moved in from Johnston to Benton in the year 1794. His name was Francis Griswold. He moved to the Flat Rock County in 1821 and died in September 1822, aged 82 or 84 years.
My father and mother raised seven children to be grown and lost two when small. The oldest, Elias born in town of Benton July 20, 1797. Ann born January 15, 1799. Henry born October 20, 1800. Polly 1803, Eliza 1807, Cyrus 1809. Samuel December 1, 1811.
Cyrus Buell died at Flat Rock, Bartholomew county, Indiana of the bloody flu , in July 1827. Eliza married a man by the name of Vickery, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana in 1811. Vickery died in1833. Eliza married a man by the name of Clabourn Louis of Indianapolis in 1837. Moved to California in 1850. Soon after arriving there she died of typhoid fever.
Ann Buell married a man by the name of Obadiah Walker, in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1821. He died in New Orleans in the spring of 1822, of yellow fever. In the summer of 1823 she married Henry Ransted, near Gronsburg, Indiana. They moved to Teree Coupee Prairie, Indiana about 1835. He died about 1865.
Henry Buell has not been heard from since 1861. He was living in Arkansas when the war commenced.
Polly married John Walker brother of Obadiah Walker in 1822, in Flat Rock, Indiana. They are living in California.
Samuel Buell is living in southern California."
Elias Buell married Sarah Hammond in Allensville, October 19, 1817. Sarah Hammond born January 22, 1800, in the town of Liberty, Frederick Co., MD. Her father emigrated to the town of Lyons, Ontario Co., NY in 1801. Lot Hammond, her father, moved to Allensville, Indiana 1816."
Location of her death and burial has not been confirmed.
Thanks to Find a Grave contributor, Susan Dawn (Kelley) Spencer for the following: In 1836 Jerusha accompanied her grandson Obadiah Walker Jr., then a 13-year old boy who she had a major part in raising, by horseback from Rising Sun to Indianapolis where they parted ways and he traveled on by foot to Hamilton, IN to join his mother Ann who had remarried. She returned to Cotton Twp.
