George Francis Corrigan, 84, a resident of Anne Arundel County, died September 10.
He was born July 20, 1926, the oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. George F. Corrigan of Wichita, Kan. Mr. Corrigan attended parochial schools in Wichita and served in the U.S. Maritime Service Naval Reserve Program from July 1944 to June 1946 with duty as a Midshipman and Third Officer in the South Pacific and Indian oceans. In 1950, he received a B.A. degree from Wichita State University, and in that same year, he married Beverly Taylor.
The couple settled in Washington, D.C., where Mr. Corrigan was employed by the National Security Agency and pursued graduate studies at Georgetown University. In 1954, he was awarded an M.A. degree from Georgetown and in 1957, he was accepted as a Ph.D. candidate. In 1961, he was assigned by the NSA to Frankfurt, Germany for a three-year tour of duty. In 1977, he was assigned to England, where he and his family spent four years.
Upon returning home, he retired from the NSA and subsequently took a position with Anne Arundel Community College, teaching classes in the senior program, including Heritage Harbor. He was well known for his lively classes on International and National Affairs as well as Great Books. In this capacity, he also planned and conducted various tours of Europe for his classes, including the Soviet Union and Czech Republic, Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Greece and Turkey.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Beverly, who he cared for through a long illness until her death in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Hill of Heritage Harbor, who he married in 2008; five children, Kathleen Spry and her husband John of Odenton, Brigid Corrigan of Bluemont, Va., George F. Corrigan Jr. of Seattle, Wash., Jean Corrigan Casey and her husband Mike of Brentwood, and Carolyn Lee and her husband Stephen of Banbury, U.K.; two grandchildren, Daniel and Nicola Lee; one great-grandchild, Isabel Turner of the U.K.; two brothers, Thomas of Seattle, Wash. and Michael of Wichita, Kan.; and two sisters, Mary McEnulty and Kathleen Wells, both of Wichita, Kan.
The family will host a gathering from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15 at Heritage Harbor Lodge, 959 River Strand Loop, Annapolis, MD 21401. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 17, followed by a reception, at St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Church, 14800 Seton Drive, Crofton, MD 21401.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203-7090 or Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
