Birth city said to be Berlin, son of Jacob Joseph Waldstein. Nathan immigrated to U.S. in 1864, widower of Rosa Kiefer. He was a prominent lumber merchant and mill owner in St. Louis.

There is a yet undetermined relationship to Joseph Jacob Waldstein, earlier settler in St Louis, also prominent (with a brother)) in lumber business there and in Arkansas.

Nathan's son, Franz Waldstein, survived him.
