He married Elizabeth (Wolfenbarger/Wolfinbarger ) Maritt on 9 Mar 1829 in Knox Co., TN. In 1860 the family lived in Falling Spring (post office area), Ozark County, MO.
Elizabeth applied for a Civil War widow‘s pension on 19 June 1863, and that file revealed the tragic end of Samuel Sr.‘s life. The wound to his right foot ultimately caused his death—on 15 May 1862. Colly B. Holland, a lieutenant colonel with the Phelps Regiment, reported the following in his affidavit:
Samuel Meritt was wounded at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Ark. on the 7th of March 1862, while engaged with the Rebble [sic] enemy, and in the line of his duty and without fault on his part . . . the ball entered his right foot and passed through his foot shattering his foot bones very severely. He was transferred to hospital at Cassville, Mo. and I saw him frequently for some two weeks when he was removed to his friends in Ozark County, and as I was informed died from the effects of said wound about May 15th 1862. While he was at hospital at Cassville, Mo., his wound was very bad & I have no reason to doubt that the . . . wound produced his death.
Son-in-law, James H. Sallee, and son, John W. Maritt, stated the following in their joint affidavit:
We are personally well acquainted with Samuel Maritt Dec [deceased] . . . and know that said Samuel Maritt died May 15th, 1862 from the effects of a gun shot wound received in right foot at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Ark. March 7th 1862, that he was removed from hospital at Cassville, Mo. about April 1st 1862 to his friends in Christian Co. & from there to Ozark County, that he was carefully nursed by his friends, but that his foot was so badly shattered by the ball that inflammation set in and mortification [gangrene] succeeded causing his death.
Samuel Sr.‘s doctor, Randolph Lawrence, M.D., gave the following medical information in his affidavit:
I attended upon him during his last illness and know that he died in Ozark County, Missouri on the 15th of May 1862 of gun shot wound received in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas March 7, 1862. The said Merritt was brought home in a wagon from Cassville – mortification set in, and he died at home as above stated.
